Man, the only reason we might be getting an e-reader is because Dad’s eyesight is failing and he needs something backlit and with bigger letters. We actually have an insane amount of books in this place, and I love it.

I will only be interested in e-readers if they can imitate the feel and the smell of paper. Books smell really good. >w<

And yeah, used books are cheaper. :D

Proper ereaders aren’t backlit though, because backlit is bad for the eyes. They use ‘e-ink’ technology and it genuinely looks like each page is printed. Pretty cool. Also only uses battery when you change what’s displayed - so like, a page turn etc. Also, I have standards for used books…and a lot of the books I bought in the past few years were from Borders going banrupt and liqudating everything. :D

Ah, I didn’t know that. XD I guess it’s the text size options he’s mostly going for, then.

We don’t actually have too many used books, but my mom has a Chapters card so we get discounts there, and she does pop in to used book stores occasionally. We also have a ridiculous amount of old fantasy and sci-fi books because my parents are both geeks and have been for a long time. XD

lol get an effing kindle. i love mine. i can take a library with me everywhere i go

I have a Kindle. The problem is that I mostly buy used books, which are a lot cheaper than buying Kindle books, for the most part. When I buy books from the library I get them for a quarter apiece, if they’re paperbacks, so those twelve books I bought from the library? Cost me three bucks total. (And as a bonus, the library booksale directly benefits the library, so not only am I getting really cheap books, I’m helping out the library a little bit, which is the least I can do considering how much I use it.) And the books I got from Powell’s? I got every single book cheaper than I would’ve had I bought it on the Kindle, with the exception of Looking for Alaska, which was the same price (but I also bought that one new because they didn’t have a used copy). I just can’t justify spending extra money on books that I can’t even hold in my hands, because I really do enjoy touching and holding and displaying my books. I guess I still have an old-fashioned streak in me. So I just use my Kindle for the free classics you can get on it, really.

Yeah, I can’t justify paying for them either. I don’t have a kindle, but I do have a kobo (and once that dies on me, I’ll probably switch to kindle). I use mine for the books in public domain, but also for fanfiction, and occasionally, notes - when I don’t have access to a printer (or time to print). I’ve paid for an ebook once and that was because a book in a series I was following got released that way first and I wanted it - and even then it was only $5 or less.

My bookshelf back home is glorious. It’s absolutely massive and as soon as I moved it upstairs and started organising all my books onto it…I realised I already had too many and had to cull off the overflow to send to the bookshelf downstairs…and I’m going to have to start shelving horizontally soon to use up more space. This isn’t even counting my dvd collection. I’m actually thinking of moving the desk out of my room and just making it wall to wall bookshelves with my bed shoved in a corner - because it’s not the same when your books aren’t in your room.

I definitely prefer paying to physically own books, but I love being able to carry so much reading material around in my handbag too. Also, the fanfiction.

Okay. Mainly the fanfiction.

Exactly a week from now, on Saturday, June 9th, I turn 18. Legally I will be seen as an adult.

I don’t know how to feel about this. XD I feel like my childhood definitely isn’t over, I have a lot of growing to do as a person. I’m glad I’ll be able to do 18+ things at conventions and stuff, though!

so I’m not sure what I’m really trying to say here. XD I guess I have mixed feelings about it.

MAYBE NOW THAT I’M OLDER I’LL FINALLY GET A GOD DAMN BOYFRIEND.

image

If you’re anything like me, you won’t really feel any different XD Heck, even though I’m turning 22 in just over a month, I don’t feel any different than when I did when I turned 18, or any older (and since people keep mistaking me for being younger, that really doesn’t help), and the most I got to do was vote for the first time…which, in all honesty, I really didn’t care to do (and I still don’t, but it’s a necessary evil). But hey, I have the social skills of a rock, and I also didn’t care much when I turned 19 and was able to legally drink (mostly because I don’t like alcohol), so maybe you’ll get a little more fun out of being 18.

Haha, I think mostly I’m looking forward to buying 18+ manga and going to 18+ panels at cons. >w<

I, too, have no interest in drinking. I don’t like carbonated drinks, and I’ve tried wine and didn’t like it. I also have enough issues with keeping concentration while sleep deprived, and I really have a fear of not being in control of my actions and not remembering what I’ve done, and those are also the main reasons why I’ll never try recreational drugs either. >w<

(I work in a Coffee Shop. I was on break in the lobby when a couple walks in. Directly behind them is a cute little boy in Batman costume.)
Me: “Oh my God! It’s BATMAN!”
(The boy stops, strikes a pose and starts looking around menacingly. After a few seconds, he approaches the counter.)
Mother: “Jeff, would you like a chocolate milk?”
Boy: “I am not Jeff. I am The Batman.”
Mother: “The Batman, would you like a chocolate milk?”
Boy: “Yes. Yes, The Batman would.”
(The couple pays while the boy sits down with his chocolate milk. He keeps a stern look on his face as he sips the drink.)
Boy: *sips* “Gotham is safe.”
